Poetry of Resistance aims to promote European Remembrance and the active participation of today’s youth, by studying and reflecting on the role played by resistance movements in the combat to dictatorships of the 20th century.
We understand that preserving the memory of the resistance movements across Europe may be an effective and attractive way to engage young people in civic and political life, reversing the tendencies described and creating opportunities for new democratic achievements based on the common European history.
In recent years we are have observed across Europe the emergence of several threats to democracy due to the increasing extremist and xenophobic political forces that resort to “distortion of historical facts, and employ symbolism and rhetoric that echoes aspects of totalitarian propaganda, including racism, anti-Semitismand hatred towards sexual and other minorities.” (European Parliament, 2019).
It seems that the suffering that occurred over the 20th century, due to the atrocities committed by totalitarian and autocratic regimes that ravaged, Europe is being somehow forgotten.
To highlight to the younger generation the link between historical events and current political and social developments.
Create opportunities for young people to explore and reflect on artistic movements of resistance.
Raise awareness of 20th century European history, particularly with regard to totalitarian regimes and the artistic resistance movements that brought them down.
Raise young Europeans’ awareness of their common history, culture, cultural heritage and values, thereby improving their understanding of the European Union, its origins, objectives, diversity and achievements, as well as the importance of mutual understanding and tolerance.
